Choosing a Leadership example for your Civil Service application

Show how you took responsibility, gave others clarity and helped work move towards a shared purpose. Leadership can include formal management, but a title alone does not explain what you did.

What does Leadership mean in practice?

The useful question is what your actions enabled. Did people understand the task, know their responsibilities and feel able to raise problems? You do not need an unpopular decision or a dramatic crisis to explain that.

Where to look for your own example

Use these as prompts to search your experience, not as claims to copy. Choose one specific event you can explain, then check it against the vacancy’s requirements.

  • A volunteer coordinator who gives new helpers clear roles and checks they have the support to carry them out.
  • A project member who takes responsibility for an agreed piece of work and keeps the group informed.
  • A club organiser who makes participation fairer and addresses conduct that excludes members.

A worked example extract

The fictional extract shows direction and support without overstating authority. Complete the story with what happened and your responsibility for any issues. ‘I was in charge’ would not explain the same contribution.

Questions that turn your notes into evidence

Answer in ordinary sentences first. A short note with a spelling mistake is easier to develop than a polished claim with no detail. Then use STAR to organise the event: brief context, your responsibility, personal actions and the result.

  • What purpose or standard did you help people understand?
  • Which responsibilities did you personally hold?
  • How did you make roles and expectations clear?
  • How did you support participation and respond to concerns?
  • What outcome did you take responsibility for?

Match the evidence to the advertised grade

At any level, describe the accountability you genuinely held. A personal responsibility or informal coordination example should not be inflated into managing a department. If the role calls for wider leadership, show the actual direction, decisions and support you provided across that wider area.

The official guidance has separate grade groups. Use the relevant indicators to check your example; you are not expected to fit every indicator into one answer. The vacancy sets the word count, not the grade name.

What can weaken the answer?

Do not present inclusive treatment as something relevant only to senior leaders. Avoid implying that issuing instructions is enough, or that smooth delivery is weak evidence. Explain the actions that made the direction understandable and achievable.

Keep your actions distinct from the shared outcome. Explain figures you use and check any AI-developed wording against what happened. The example here is original teaching material, not an official answer or a promise of a sift score.

Your next writing step

Choose one event and answer the five questions above. If you cannot explain an important action or result, investigate that gap before spending time polishing. Read your draft beside the actual requirement, then edit it to the stated limit.
