Developing Self and Others: showing the impact of learning
Explain how you built a useful capability in yourself or helped someone else learn. Show the need, the learning or support provided, and how it affected what you or they could do afterwards.

What does Developing Self and Others mean in practice?
Training attendance is a starting point. The useful detail is how the learning was applied. Feedback from someone else is a valid way to identify a gap; you do not need to claim you noticed everything yourself.
Where to look for your own example
Use these as prompts to search your experience, not as claims to copy. Choose one specific event you can explain, then check it against the vacancy’s requirements.
- A volunteer who learns a booking system and then helps another volunteer use it.
- A colleague who responds to feedback on their written work and checks whether later drafts improve.
- A club member who demonstrates a task, gives another person a supported practice attempt and follows up.
A worked example extract
The fictional extract shows tailored support rather than doing the work for someone. Finish with what they could do afterwards and what you learned about helping them. Avoid claiming complete independence without a follow-up check.
Questions that turn your notes into evidence
Answer in ordinary sentences first. A short note with a spelling mistake is easier to develop than a polished claim with no detail. Then use STAR to organise the event: brief context, your responsibility, personal actions and the result.
- What skill or knowledge needed to improve?
- How was the need identified: feedback, observation or your own reflection?
- What learning or support did you choose, and why?
- How did you adapt it to the person or situation?
- What could be done differently afterwards, and how was that checked?
Match the evidence to the advertised grade
Read the advertised indicators before deciding whether to focus on your learning, another person’s development or a wider capability need. Where you held team responsibility, explain how you made time and opportunities for learning. Wider responsibility may involve how development needs were identified and addressed across a service.
The official guidance has separate grade groups. Use the relevant indicators to check your example; you are not expected to fit every indicator into one answer. The vacancy sets the word count, not the grade name.
What can weaken the answer?
You do not need to be a line manager, and teaching a practical step can be relevant. Do not turn someone else’s achievement into your own. Describe your support, give them credit for their learning and avoid personal information about their difficulties.
Keep your actions distinct from the shared outcome. Explain figures you use and check any AI-developed wording against what happened. The example here is original teaching material, not an official answer or a promise of a sift score.
Your next writing step
Choose one event and answer the five questions above. If you cannot explain an important action or result, investigate that gap before spending time polishing. Read your draft beside the actual requirement, then edit it to the stated limit.
