Civil Service online tests: formats, practice and results

Read your invitation to find out which test you need to take. Civil Service tests do not all use the same questions, timer or scoring. Practise the named test first, then use additional exercises to understand your reasoning.

Which Civil Service test have you been invited to take?

The official overview lists verbal, numerical, judgement, management judgement, work strengths, styles assessment, customer service skills and casework skills tests. Use its links to the guidance for your named assessment. Do not treat ‘judgement test’ and ‘work strengths test’ as interchangeable names.

Your grade alone does not identify the test. Read the full invitation, deadline and any separate candidate instructions before opening the live assessment.

  • Verbal or numerical: practise interpreting the information provided, rather than relying on outside knowledge.
  • Judgement or management judgement: understand the response format before practising workplace scenarios.
  • Work strengths or styles: read the specific instructions about the responses being requested.
  • Customer service or casework: use the official introduction to understand the different tasks involved.

How judgement-test ratings work

Official CSJT guidance describes a self-assessment part and a workplace-scenario part. For the scenario actions, rate each independently. More than one can receive the same rating. The official CSJT is not timed; do not confuse an optional practice countdown with its rules.

For your own preparation, ask what each action would actually achieve. Does it help the person, respect the relevant process and address the problem? Do not automatically choose escalation for every difficulty or assume that acting alone is always better.

A useful practice routine

Sift Assist offers original, free account-based judgement exercises with suggested ratings and explanations. They are supplementary learning material, not official questions, a full test replica or a prediction of your result. Our timed mode is an optional practice challenge.

  • Open the official practice for the test named in your invitation. Check the controls and accessibility as well as the questions.
  • After a practice scenario, write one sentence explaining each choice. This reveals whether you understood the action or guessed from its tone.
  • Review the explanation and identify the point you missed: evidence, authority, impact on others or follow-through.
  • Try a different scenario. Repeating a remembered answer is less useful than explaining a new one.

What does a percentile mean?

A percentile compares your performance with a reference group. It is not the percentage of questions you answered correctly. Meeting the required minimum does not guarantee progression; the recruitment process may apply a higher threshold.

A score from Sift Assist is a practice score under our own rules. Do not compare it numerically with an official percentile or use a small set of practice questions to decide whether you are certain to pass.

Before starting the real test

If something goes wrong, follow the test’s recovery instructions and contact the recruitment team. Describe the technical problem without sharing confidential test content.

  • Check the actual deadline, device guidance and test-specific timing.
  • Arrange a suitable place and allow time to resolve access problems.
  • Contact the recruiter about adjustments or technical difficulties as early as possible.
  • Complete the live assessment independently. Do not use AI, another person or our practice tools to supply answers.
  • Keep the recruitment contact details available; never post live questions publicly to ask for help.
