Civil Service assessment centres: preparing for each exercise

An assessment centre brings together exercises used to assess suitability for a role or programme. It may be remote or in person. It is not a universal stage for every HEO, SEO or senior vacancy: prepare for the process in your own invitation.

Turn your invitation into a preparation list

Record the exercises, timings, location or joining instructions, materials allowed and any preparation to submit beforehand. Note the contact for access problems or adjustments. If the invitation leaves an important point unclear, ask rather than filling it with assumptions from another campaign.

Fast Stream and other programmes can have their own assessment formats. A general article cannot replace the current candidate pack for that programme.

  • What will I be asked to produce or discuss?
  • Which skills or Success Profile elements are named?
  • What can I prepare beforehand, and what must be completed independently on the day?
  • Are notes, reference materials or particular devices allowed?

Written exercises: make a clear recommendation

In a practice exercise, identify the audience and the decision they need to make before writing. Separate supplied facts, uncertainties and your recommendation. Use headings if they help the reader find the point quickly.

Leave time to check whether you answered the actual request. A beautifully written summary is not enough if the task asked you to compare options and recommend one.

Presentations: explain the point and expect questions

Practise giving the main point early and using only the evidence needed to support it. Check your timing aloud. Slides, if permitted, should help your explanation rather than contain every word you plan to say.

Prepare to explain why you chose your recommendation and what would change it. When challenged, listen to the question and distinguish a useful objection from a misunderstanding. You do not need to pretend your proposal has no limitations.

Group or role-play exercises: make your contribution useful

If a discussion is included, help the group make progress: clarify the task, contribute relevant evidence, listen and build on useful points. Speaking most often is not the same as contributing most effectively.

In a role-play, respond to the information and authority given in the brief. Explain a practical next step instead of promising something outside your role. Do not invent rules or information that the scenario has not supplied.

Check the practical details

Scoring and how exercises are combined vary by campaign. Do not assume that assessors cannot see other results or that one difficult exercise automatically ends your application. Refocus on the instructions for the next task.

  • For remote exercises, test the camera, microphone, connection and required software.
  • For in-person exercises, plan travel, access and any documents requested.
  • Ask about adjustments early and confirm the arrangements in writing.
  • Prepare water, permitted materials and contact details before the session.
  • If a technical issue occurs, report it promptly rather than silently losing assessment time.

A practical way to rehearse

Choose one exercise from your invitation. Practise it with an unrelated, non-confidential scenario and the stated time limit. Afterwards, check whether your response answered the task, used the evidence and ended with a clear next step. Repeat the weak part, rather than repeatedly rehearsing the whole day.
